Veterans of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival know the best time in town is almost invariably the "after-hours" gig at the Hotel Healdsburg Lobby, when the headliners head on over following the Friday and Saturday night shows. Anchoring it all is John Heard, the bass player with the golden touch – as well as backing Ahmad Jamal and Oscar Peterson, he's also a top-ranked oil painter. His regular combo has long included pianist Danny Grissett and one of L.A.'s first-call young drummers, Lorca Hart.
